HOW TO REMOVE SWEAT SMELL FROM SPORTS JERSEYS
Polyester jerseys can sometimes retain sweat odor even after regular washing. This happens because bacteria trapped in synthetic fibers produce the smell, and normal detergent doesn't always eliminate them completely.
PRE-TREATMENT
Soak the jersey in a solution of one cup white vinegar per bucket of cold water for 30 minutes before washing. Vinegar is a natural antibacterial that kills odor-causing bacteria without damaging the fabric or print. Alternatively, add half a cup of baking soda to the soak water.
WASHING TIPS
Use a sports-specific detergent designed for synthetic fabrics — brands like Sportwash or any detergent labeled 'for sportswear' contain enzymes that break down sweat bacteria. Wash in cold water. Don't use fabric softener — it coats fibers and traps bacteria.
PREVENTION
Never leave a sweaty jersey in your kit bag overnight. Hang it to air immediately after playing, even before washing. Wash jerseys after every use — don't wait for multiple wears. Sun-drying occasionally helps as UV light kills bacteria naturally.
NUCLEAR OPTION
For jerseys with persistent deep odor, soak overnight in cold water with 2 tablespoons of oxygen bleach (OxiClean or similar). This is safe for sublimation prints and eliminates even stubborn embedded odors.
