HOW TO WASH AND CARE FOR SUBLIMATION JERSEYS: MAKE THEM LAST

By Team Athenax · May 2026 · 5 min read

Sublimation jerseys are built to last, but proper care extends their life significantly. Here's how to keep your team jerseys looking brand new season after season.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

Always wash sublimation jerseys in cold water (below 30°C). Hot water can damage the polyester fibers over time. Use a mild liquid detergent — avoid powdered detergent as undissolved particles can abrade the fabric. Turn the jersey inside out before washing to protect the printed surface.

MACHINE VS HAND WASH

Both are fine for sublimation jerseys. For machine washing, use a gentle or delicate cycle. Place jerseys in a mesh laundry bag if possible. Avoid washing with heavy items like jeans or towels that can cause friction damage. For hand washing, soak for 10-15 minutes in cold soapy water, gently agitate, and rinse thoroughly.

WHAT TO AVOID

Never use bleach or fabric softener on sublimation jerseys. Bleach can damage the dye bond, and fabric softener coats the fibers reducing their moisture-wicking ability. Don't iron directly on the printed surface — if you must iron, use low heat on the inside of the jersey. Never dry clean sublimation sportswear.

DRYING

Air drying is best. Hang the jersey on a hanger or clothesline in shade — direct sunlight for extended periods can cause gradual fading. If using a dryer, use the lowest heat setting. Polyester dries quickly, so tumble drying is rarely necessary.

STORAGE TIPS

Store jerseys flat or on hangers — never crumpled in a bag for extended periods. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For seasonal storage, wash the jerseys first and store in breathable garment bags.
