WHAT DOES GSM MEAN IN JERSEYS? A BUYER'S GUIDE TO FABRIC WEIGHT

By Team Athenax · May 2026 · 5 min read

When comparing jersey options, you'll often see a number followed by "GSM." Understanding what this means helps you make a better buying decision.

GSM STANDS FOR GRAMS PER SQUARE METER

GSM measures fabric weight — specifically, how many grams one square meter of the fabric weighs. A 150 GSM fabric weighs 150 grams per square meter. The higher the GSM, the heavier and thicker the fabric.

COMMON GSM RANGES FOR JERSEYS

Lightweight jerseys (120-140 GSM) are ideal for running, athletics, and indoor sports where maximum breathability is needed. They feel paper-thin and ultra-comfortable but may be less durable. Standard sports jerseys (140-170 GSM) offer the best balance of comfort, durability, and performance for cricket, football, kabaddi, and most team sports. Heavy jerseys (180-220 GSM) provide more structure and warmth, suitable for cooler weather, winter sports, or premium fashion-oriented designs.

WHICH GSM IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

For most Indian cricket and sports teams playing in warm weather, 140-160 GSM is the sweet spot. It's light enough to stay cool but substantial enough to feel like a quality garment. If you're playing in Mumbai summer heat, go lower (130-140). If you're playing winter morning matches in Delhi, go higher (170-180).

GSM AND PRINT QUALITY

Sublimation printing works best on 140-170 GSM polyester. Too light and the fabric can wrinkle during pressing, causing print distortions. Too heavy and the ink penetration may be uneven. Our standard 150 GSM fabric is specifically chosen for optimal sublimation results.
